During summer months you can drive the Willard Peak Road starting in Mantua and eventually reach the Willard Peak Overlook and Willard Peak trailhead. You pass the Box Elder Creek trailhead along the way. Mountain Goats can be found if you look around a little along with some great picture opportunities. The road is best for high clearance or off-road vehicles like 4-wheelers or jeeps. Be prepared to meet a lot of traffic as it is very popular locally. A mountain goat herd was introduced to the area in 1994 by the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWF) and it has thrived and spread. Hiking is good. The area was one of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) reclamation projects in the 1930’s with miles of terraces and trails established to help control flooding problems following many years of over grazing in the late 1800’s to early 1900’s.
